The Complete Pallet Lifecycle
From sustainable forest to final recycling, every pallet goes through a carefully managed lifecycle that maximizes value and minimizes waste. Here are the 10 stages of a pallet's journey through the PalletsEco circular economy.
Sustainable Forestry
Raw timber is harvested from SFI and FSC-certified forests using sustainable practices that ensure reforestation and biodiversity. Every board we use can be traced back to a responsibly managed forest through our chain-of-custody documentation.
Lumber Milling
Logs are processed at regional sawmills into dimensional lumber — typically 1x4, 1x6, 2x4, and 4x4 cuts for pallet components. Sawmill byproducts like sawdust and bark are repurposed for animal bedding and garden mulch.
Kiln Drying & Treatment
Green lumber is kiln-dried to 19% moisture content or below for dimensional stability. Export pallets undergo ISPM 15 heat treatment at 56C core temperature for 30 minutes to eliminate pests and pathogens.
Pallet Assembly
Boards and stringers are assembled using pneumatic nail guns on custom jigs ensuring consistent dimensions and nail patterns. Each pallet is built to NWPCA specifications for its intended grade and load rating.
Quality Inspection
Every pallet passes our 9-point inspection: board integrity, nail placement, stringer condition, dimensional accuracy, surface smoothness, load capacity test, moisture level check, marking verification, and visual grade confirmation.
Delivery & Deployment
Pallets are loaded onto our GPS-tracked fleet for delivery to client facilities. Drivers confirm quantities, condition, and placement at delivery. Real-time delivery confirmations are sent to client account managers.
Active Service Life
Pallets enter the supply chain, supporting warehouse storage, transportation, and retail display. A well-maintained hardwood pallet typically completes 15-20 one-way trips or 4-7 years in a closed-loop system.
Collection & Return
Used and damaged pallets are collected from client sites on scheduled routes. Our drivers sort on-site, separating reusable pallets from those needing repair and those destined for recycling.
Repair & Refurbishment
Pallets with repairable damage receive new boards, stringers, or blocks. They are re-graded, re-stamped if heat-treated, and returned to saleable inventory. Repair extends pallet life by an average of 3-5 additional years.
End-of-Life Recycling
When a pallet reaches the end of its structural life, it is dismantled. Usable boards are salvaged. Remaining wood is ground into mulch, biomass fuel, or animal bedding. Metal fasteners are recycled. Zero waste reaches the landfill.
Clear, Honest Pricing
We believe in pricing transparency. No hidden fees, no surprise surcharges, no bait-and-switch quotes. Our volume-based pricing tiers are published openly so you know exactly what to expect. Every quote includes delivery, and we offer a price-match guarantee against any comparable provider.

What Affects Your Pallet Price?
Material & Grade
Hardwood costs more than softwood. Grade A (like new) pallets are priced higher than Grade B or C. Plastic and composite pallets carry a premium but offer longer service life and lower per-trip costs.
Size & Specifications
Standard 48x40 GMA pallets are our most economical option. Custom dimensions, heavy-duty load ratings, ISPM 15 heat treatment, and special features like anti-slip coatings affect pricing.
Delivery Distance
Free delivery within 50 miles of any PalletsEco facility. Beyond that, a transparent per-mile surcharge applies. Full truckload orders (400+ pallets) receive free delivery up to 200 miles.
Our guarantee: The price on your quote is the price you pay. No fuel surcharges, environmental fees, handling charges, or administrative costs are added after the fact. If you find a lower price from a comparable provider for the same grade and specifications, we will match it.
Technology & Innovation
We invest in cutting-edge technology to deliver better quality, faster service, and complete transparency. From RFID-tracked pallets to AI-powered grading, our technology stack gives you visibility and control over every pallet in your supply chain.
RFID Pallet Tracking
Every pallet in our managed programs can be equipped with passive RFID tags enabling real-time tracking through your supply chain. Know exactly where your pallets are, how many trips they have completed, and when they are due for inspection. Tags survive heat treatment, moisture, and impact. Compatible with all major warehouse management systems.
Customer Inventory Portal
Log in to your personalized dashboard to view current pallet inventory levels, track incoming deliveries, schedule pickups, download invoices, and review sustainability metrics. The portal provides real-time visibility into every pallet transaction with exportable reports for your ERP system. Mobile-responsive for warehouse floor access.
Automated Grading System
Our proprietary grading stations use high-resolution cameras and machine-learning algorithms to assess pallet condition in under 3 seconds. The system measures board integrity, nail protrusion, stringer cracks, and dimensional accuracy against NWPCA standards. This eliminates subjective grading and ensures consistent quality across every order.
Moisture Sensing Technology
Embedded moisture sensors in our heat-treatment kilns and storage areas continuously monitor wood moisture content to within 0.5% accuracy. Pallets are verified at 19% or below before shipment, preventing mold growth, warping, and weight compliance issues. Moisture certificates are included with every heat-treated shipment.
Load Testing Equipment
Our Portland and Sacramento facilities feature hydraulic load testing rigs that verify pallet capacity up to 15,000 lbs static load. Random samples from every production run are tested to destruction to validate our published load ratings. Test results are archived and available to clients on request.
Making a Measurable Difference
Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us. Every pallet we recycle, repair, or repurpose contributes to a healthier planet. Here is the impact we have made together with our partners.
Trees Saved
Extending pallet lifespans and recycling materials reduces the demand for virgin timber each year.
Landfill Waste Diverted
Millions of pounds of wood and materials kept out of landfills through repair, recycling, and repurposing.
Carbon Footprint Reduced
Local sourcing and efficient logistics cut transportation emissions compared to new pallet manufacturing.
Water Saved
Reusing and repairing pallets avoids the significant water consumption required in new lumber processing.
Energy Conserved
Repairing a pallet uses a fraction of the energy required to manufacture a new one from raw lumber.
How We Recycle Pallets
Our 7-step recycling process ensures that every pallet is handled responsibly, maximizing material reuse and minimizing waste at every stage.
Collection
Used and damaged pallets are collected from client sites across our service area on scheduled routes.
Sorting & Grading
Each pallet is inspected and sorted by condition: repairable, recyclable, or biomass-bound.
Dismantling
Pallets beyond repair are carefully dismantled. Reusable boards are salvaged; nails and hardware are separated for metal recycling.
Repair & Rebuild
Repairable pallets receive new boards, stringers, or blocks. They are re-nailed, sanded, and graded to meet quality standards.
Wood Processing
Non-reusable wood is ground into mulch, animal bedding, or biomass fuel pellets — nothing goes to waste.
Quality Assurance
Repaired and rebuilt pallets undergo a final multi-point inspection before being returned to inventory.
Redistribution
Certified pallets re-enter the supply chain, completing the circle and reducing demand for virgin timber.
Safety & Compliance
Safety is non-negotiable at PalletsEco. We maintain rigorous compliance with OSHA, DOT, and FMCSA regulations across all operations. Our safety record speaks for itself: incident rates 62% below industry average, 99.2% on-time delivery with zero preventable accidents in the past 18 months.
OSHA Compliance Program
Full compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and 1926 (Construction) standards. Annual third-party safety audits. All facilities maintain current OSHA 300 logs with incident rates 62% below the industry average for wood product manufacturing.

Incident Response Protocol
Documented incident response procedures for workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, chemical spills, and fire emergencies. All incidents are investigated within 24 hours with root cause analysis and corrective action reports. Our lost-time injury rate is 0.8 per 200,000 work hours — well below the industry average of 3.2.
Our 9-Point Quality Guarantee
Every pallet that leaves our facility has passed a rigorous 9-point inspection process. We back our quality with a replacement warranty: if any pallet fails to meet its stated grade specifications within 30 days of delivery, we replace it at no cost. Our 98% customer satisfaction rate is a direct result of this commitment to quality.
Board Integrity
Each deck board and bottom board is checked for cracks longer than 6 inches, rot, excessive wane, and holes larger than 1 inch. Boards with damage exceeding grade tolerances are replaced before the pallet is approved.
Nail & Fastener Placement
Nail positions are verified against NWPCA patterns. Protruding nails are driven flush or removed. Missing nails are replaced. Ring-shank nails are used for all structural connections to prevent pull-through under load.
Stringer Condition
All three stringers (or block/stringer combinations) are inspected for cracks, notch damage, and decay. Stringers with splits extending more than 50% of their length are replaced. Notch cuts are verified for forklift compatibility.
Dimensional Accuracy
Overall length, width, and height are measured and verified to within 1/4 inch of specified dimensions. Board spacing is confirmed for consistent fork entry and product support. Squareness is checked using diagonal measurements.
Surface Smoothness
Top deck surfaces are inspected for splinters, rough edges, and raised grain that could damage products or packaging. Sanding is performed where needed. No sharp edges or protruding hardware on any contact surface.
Load Capacity Verification
Pallets are verified to meet their rated static, dynamic, and racking load capacities. Random sample testing on hydraulic rigs confirms published ratings. Every production run includes at least one destructive test to failure.
Moisture Content Check
Handheld pin-type moisture meters verify wood moisture content at multiple points. Acceptable range is 14-19% for standard pallets and verified post-treatment for ISPM 15 pallets. Readings are recorded in our quality database.
Marking & Stamping Verification
Grade stamps, ISPM 15 treatment marks, company logos, and any client-specific markings are verified for correct placement, legibility, and accuracy. Missing or illegible marks are re-applied before shipment.
Final Visual Inspection
A complete visual walkthrough confirms overall appearance meets grade specifications. The pallet is rotated and viewed from all angles. Any cosmetic issues not caught in prior steps are addressed. The pallet receives a final approval mark.
Our Warranty & Replacement Policy
Every pallet sold by PalletsEco carries a 30-day quality warranty. If a pallet fails to meet its grade specifications due to a quality defect (not misuse or overloading), we will replace it free of charge including delivery. For contract clients, our warranty extends to 90 days. Claims are processed within 48 hours. In over 2 million pallets handled last year, our warranty claim rate was just 0.3%.
Request Quality SpecsRecycled vs New: The Numbers
The environmental case for recycled pallets is overwhelming. Every metric — from carbon emissions to water consumption to cost — favors choosing recycled or repaired pallets over manufacturing new ones from virgin lumber. Here is a detailed comparison per pallet.
| Metric | New Pallet | Recycled Pallet | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| CO2 Emissions | 28.5 kg per pallet | 4.2 kg per pallet | 85% reduction |
| Water Consumption | 58 gallons per pallet | 6 gallons per pallet | 90% reduction |
| Energy Usage | 31 kWh per pallet | 8 kWh per pallet | 74% reduction |
| Average Cost | $11.50 - $15.00 | $5.50 - $8.50 | 40-52% savings |
| Trees Consumed | 0.0065 trees per pallet | 0 trees per pallet | 100% reduction |
| Landfill Waste | 3.2 lbs packaging waste | 0 lbs (zero waste) | 100% reduction |
| Transport Emissions | 6.8 kg CO2 (avg mill distance) | 2.1 kg CO2 (local sourcing) | 69% reduction |
What This Means at Scale
For a business using 10,000 pallets per year, switching from 100% new pallets to recycled pallets saves approximately 243 tons of CO2, 520,000 gallons of water, 230 MWh of energy, and $40,000-65,000 in direct pallet costs. That is the equivalent of taking 53 cars off the road for a year, or the annual water usage of 12 American households. We provide these calculations in your quarterly sustainability report, giving your ESG team verified data for corporate responsibility reporting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions we hear most often. Need more detail? Our team is always happy to help.
What types of pallets do you buy and sell?
We handle all major pallet types including standard 48x40 GMA pallets, 42x42, 48x48, custom sizes, hardwood, softwood, heat-treated, and export-grade pallets. We buy and sell Grade A (like new), Grade B (good condition), and Grade C (economy) pallets. We also work with plastic and composite pallets for specialized applications.
What areas do you serve?
We serve the entire western United States with primary operations in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and Montana. Our Portland-area clients enjoy same-day and next-day service, while most other locations in our coverage area receive service within 2-3 business days.
How quickly can you deliver pallets?
For the Portland metro area, we offer same-day delivery for orders placed before 10 AM if the product is in stock. Next-day delivery is available throughout Oregon and Washington. For other western states, standard delivery is 2-5 business days depending on location and volume. Rush delivery options are available at an additional cost.
Do you offer heat-treated (ISPM 15) pallets for export?
Yes. We are a fully certified ISPM 15 heat-treatment facility. All export pallets are treated to the required core temperature of 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, stamped with our official IPPC mark, and accompanied by compliance documentation. We can heat-treat both new and used pallets.
What happens to pallets that cannot be repaired?
Pallets that are beyond economical repair are dismantled and processed. Reusable boards are salvaged for future repairs. Remaining wood is ground into mulch for landscaping, animal bedding, or biomass fuel pellets. Metal fasteners are recycled separately. Our goal is zero landfill waste from pallet materials.
Can you set up a recurring pickup and delivery schedule?
Absolutely. Many of our clients operate on weekly or bi-weekly pickup and delivery schedules. We assign dedicated routes and drivers so your team always knows when to expect service. Scheduled programs also qualify for volume pricing discounts. Contact us to design a program tailored to your facility.
